Travel and airports: a companion from W1 to the departures board

Some evenings start in an arrivals hall and some trips finish a long way from W1. The travel line covers both: a companion who meets you after a flight, keeps you company on the road into town, or travels with you for a day or longer beyond London. Each arrangement is quoted in writing before you confirm, with the journey counted in and nothing saved for later.

Travel bookings are held with a 50 percent deposit by bank transfer, and the share of it that covers travel is non-refundable, because tickets and cars are paid for before anyone sets off. The hours themselves follow the ladder on the rates page; anything longer than a single overnight is quoted as one figure for the dates you give.

Clause 02

Heathrow and Gatwick

Each of the two airports has a three hour minimum, the journey counted within it, always quoted as one total: the three hour figure of £700 together with the taxi fare both ways. From Heathrow, the Elizabeth line runs straight to Bond Street, and the Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in about fifteen minutes, a short cab ride from Marble Arch. From Gatwick, the Express runs into Victoria, a few minutes by car from St James's. Most guests take a car the whole way and have her meet them at the hotel soon after landing.

Clause 03

Landing at awkward hours

Long haul flights come in at inconvenient times, and the account is open around the clock. Send the flight number and the hotel when you book. If the landing slips, one message from the baggage reclaim moves the arrival time and leaves the terms untouched. For a guest reaching the hotel near midnight, a visit shortly after check in is often a calmer plan than a meeting at the airport itself.

Clause 04

Arriving by train

Eurostar passengers step out at St Pancras, and a taxi on to Mayfair usually takes under half an hour outside the rush. A companion can meet you at the hotel after check in, or at a table near the station if you would rather begin the evening there. Guests coming in on the Heathrow Express land at Paddington, a few minutes by car from the hotels along Hyde Park. In each case, the booked hours begin when she meets you, not while you queue for a cab.

Clause 05

Trains, day trips and time away

Eurostar from St Pancras puts Paris a little over two hours away, and trains from Paddington reach Bath or the Cotswolds in well under two. A companion can travel with you for a day, a night or a whole weekend. For travel abroad, the house confirms her diary and documents before any figure is given. The quote then lists the hours or dates, her tickets and anything else the trip needs, all in one message, and the 50 percent deposit holds it.

Clause 06

What a trip is quoted from

A trip is priced from a few plain facts. Send them together and the reply arrives complete, with nothing to chase.

House notes
  • Dates and times, with flight or train numbers once they are known
  • The hotel for each night of the trip
  • Any dress code on the itinerary: a wedding, a race meeting, a black tie dinner
  • Rest time you would like written into a long day
Clause 07

Companions who travel well

Laura rides, skis and invents reasons to go to Italy, and she handles short notice better than most. Thea keeps her walking boots by the door and her passport close, and crosses London by bicycle out of preference. Nancy loves a long weekend and a full tank. Nora sketches on the train and always tries the unfamiliar dish first. Milena likes her plans definite: date, hour, hotel, done. Laura and Nora both appear in the toned and athletic profile, useful when a trip involves real walking.

Clause 08

Returning to town

Many trips end where they started, at a hotel on Park Lane or elsewhere in Mayfair. If you would like the last London evening covered as well, book the whole thing as a weekend or extended stay and it sits on a single quote, with a single deposit.

Yes, on dates agreed well in advance. Her diary and documents are confirmed before a figure is quoted, and the whole trip is written out in one message.

Write the moment you know. The hours can usually move to a new time; only travel costs already spent cannot be returned.
